Communications Specialist - Management Sciences for Health, Nairobi

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Communication Specialist will lead the development of communications system for the Health Commodities and Services Management (HCSM) program activities in Kenya. She / he will provide strategic communications leadership and direction to key constituencies of the program through effective communication systems and initiatives. She / he will be responsible for supporting the planning, implementation, and evaluation of various HCSM Kenya health communication and marketing activities designed by the program to impact positive health outcomes and increase Program visibility. The candidate will also organize activities that identify supporters and harness their energy to pass on important program related messages and reports to the varied stakeholder groups and ensure information is properly being captured, synthesized and shared at all levels.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Manage the preparation and implementation of all the projects communication activities, including preparation of fact sheets, publications, press releases, press briefings, edit articles, letters to the editor, etc to different audiences in a variety of formats. • Support the development and presentation of printed, electronic, and audiovisual materials for technical and lay audiences, scientific journals, the Internet, and other mass media outlets to different audiences in a variety of formats. • Actively participate in outside activities that will increase the profile of HCSM work in Kenya including dissemination of program related messages and achievements to GoK counterparts, USG, and other stakeholders. • Prepare communication strategies and activities to support the projects events. • Provide day-to-day management and coordination of communication activities for HCSM. • Act as a liaison between HCSM Kenya, other MSH projects in Kenya and globally • Develop content for HCSM Kenya intranet and provide inputs for updating the MSH corporate website • Create and maintain project photo library, ensuring project photography is kept up-to-date, coordinating with photographer(s) as needed. • Provide training to HCSM staff, partners and members on media relations and work to increase media coverage and attention for the SPS program • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Master’s degree in communications, public health, or related field. Background in pharmacy or other medical sciences is an added advantage.
  2. Minimum of 5 years experience in a similar communications role, preferably in the development arena
  3. Familiarity with communication methods and arena in Kenya and other East African countries
  4. Demonstrated success in developing communications campaigns and programs, preferably with international public health programs
  5. Exceptional written, analytical, public speaking and facilitation skills in English
  6. Experience working with electronic and print communication outlets
  7. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with donor, project stakeholders, foundations, in-country collaborators, and staff at all levels
