Social scientist for research on root and tuber diversity (m/f)

We are looking for you:
The International Potato Center (CIP) needs your expertise as a social scientist to research the socio-ecological and cultural drivers of Andean root and tuber biodiversity. CIP is a non-profit international agricultural research-for-development organization with a focus on potato, sweetpotato, and Andean roots and tubers. Its vision is to emphasize the use of roots and tubers to improve the lives of the poor. CIP is dedicated to achieving food security, improved well-being, and gender equality for poor people in root and tuber farming and food systems of the developing world. CIP works with partners to contribute high quality science, technology, and capacity strengthening for sustainable science-based solutions. CIP is headquartered in Lima, Peru, with staff and activities in over 30 locations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. CIP is a member of CGIAR, a network of 15 research centers that are mostly located in the developing world and supported by more than 50 donor members.

Your tasks will involve:
  • Conduct socio-economic surveys and case studies to assess drivers of reduced potato diversity in respective diversity hotspots. 
  • Elaborate recommendations and guidelines for decision makers to support potato landrace conservation and promote the importance of potato landrace diversity for local and regional food systems. 
  • Develop a sustainable methodology for long-term monitoring of socio-cultural factors impacting on potato diversity. 
  • Undertake research to identify the role genetic diversity for improved socio-ecological resilience and adaptation to climate change and the provision of other environmental services. 
  • Facilitate improved cooperation among actors in the public and private sectors to safeguard a functional and healthy genetic diversity in situ.
Your profile:
  • A university degree in social or cultural anthropology, sociology of agriculture or a different discipline relevant to the tasks involved 
  • Several years of research experience in the crop sector 
  • Profound knowledge of social science research methods, particularly surveys, case studies, culturally appropriate participatory approaches 
  • Excellent language skills in English and Spanish In addition you have the citizenship of an EU member state
