Seaweed Production Specialist - Indonesia

Chemonics International Inc. seeks a Seaweed Production Specialist for the USAID-funded Indonesia Marine and Climate Support (IMACS) project. This project provides technical support for improving key marine and fisheries sector components with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), local governments, coastal communities, and the private sector.

Through a desk review of grant documents, followed by discussions with grantees, seaweed cultivators and DKP staff, and sample work site visits, the Seaweed Production Specialist will prepare a Seaweed Cultivation Best Practices Guide that can be used by the DKPs, extension workers, NGOs, producers groups, etc. as a training tool and reference source. This assignment will take place from August 1 to September 30, 2014.

Specific requirements
The Seaweed Production Specialist will have the primary responsibility of preparing the following:
  • Assignment Action Plan
  • Desk review of IMACS grant related seaweed documents
  • Conduct field work, including interviews with grantees, DKP staff, and seaweed farmers/groups; visit sample seaweed cultivation sites in SULTRA and NTB; form a voluntary peer review group with government staff, grantees, and others
  • Draft and finalize a Seaweed Cultivation Best Practices Guide for distribution in SULTRA and NTB. The Guide must be Bahasa Indonesian; however, the Specialist must also provide an English synopsis of the Guide.  The Guide must be professionally formatted, with all required illustrations, pictures, tables, etc.
  • Present the Guide to a group that consists of the Peer Review Group members, representatives from concerned DKPs and other Government of Indonesia agencies, NGOs, and seaweed farmer groups in both SULTRA and NTB as nominated by the DKPs
  • Prepare and submit a Final Report
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in seaweed cultivation in Indonesia  or relevant discipline  
  • Minimum of 5 years of applied field work experience with seaweed cultivation, preferably in SULTRA or NTB, and ideally both provinces
  • Experience working with district-level government stakeholders
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Southeast Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara
  • Fluency in Bahasa Indonesian, spoken and written.  Working command of English desired but not essential.
  • Software skills with MS Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint mandatory; publication and graphic software skills desired.
