Organization Description
Founded in 2004, Build Change is a nonprofit social enterprise whose mission is to save lives in earthquakes and hurricanes. Build Change designs safe buildings, trains homeowners, builders, engineers and government officials to build them, works with governments to develop and implement building standards, partners with the private sector to improve building materials quality and create jobs, and facilitates access to incentive-based capital for reconstruction and retrofitting by partnering with financing institutions and government subsidy programs. Build Change started its work in Aceh, Indonesia, after the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, and since has expanded to include programs in China, Haiti, Colombia and the Philippines. Build Change has trained more than 20,000 people on earthquake-resistant design and construction techniques, and has provided technical assistance for more than 40,000 safer homes, impacting an estimated 200,000 people.

Build Change and its Founder and CEO, Dr. Elizabeth Hausler Strand, have received numerous awards including most recently the 2013 Structural Engineer’s Association of California Award of Excellence in the Research/Guidelines category, 2011 Schwab Foundation US Social Entrepreneur of the Year, and 2011 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability. Build Change has won grants from Echoing Green, Draper Richards Foundation, Mulago Foundation and Ashoka-Lemelson. and was named a 2008 Laureate in the Equality Category for Technology Benefiting Humanity by the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation Tech Awards.  Build Change has been published or featured in numerous media outlets and journals including Rappler, The New York Times, Huffington Post, NPR, BBC, ABCNews, Fast Company and Innovations journal. Upon request from USAID, Build Change has written three primers, on post-disaster housing new construction, retrofitting and site hazard mitigation. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Communication and Advocacy Officer - Indonesia

For the position of BBM Project Manager, Build Change is seeking an experienced professional with experience in Small and Medium Enterprises, who is familiar with the technical concepts and operations for brickmaking enterprises in a post disaster context.  The successful candidate will possess the ability to oversee and direct the successful implementation of the design of better building materials, including technical quality control through all phases of the project, timeline and scheduling projections and milestone achievements, coordination of engineers, community agents and other project staff, coordination of Build Change’s project efforts with those of our partners, and completion of progress reports. The successful applicant will have a proven management track record, history of successful mentorship, and demonstrated ability to communicate technical terms and concepts to technical and non-technical persons.

This position reports to the Indonesia Program Manager and works closely with the Lead Engineer.

Responsibilities:
  • Coordination - The Project Manager is responsible for project coordination with partners, the client and local authorities. The project partners’ activities in the area of work must be coordinated with the activities of Build Change. Active participation in regular meetings with the client and project partners is required.
  • Schedule - The Project Manager is responsible for ensuring the project schedule and milestones are met and for resolving issues that impact the project schedule immediately with the various stakeholders.
  • Reporting – The Project Manager is responsible for providing content for the project reporting, internally and externally, on a regular basis, such as weekly, monthly, quarterly and as required by the project agreement.
  • Communications - The Communication and Advocacy Officer reports directly to the Project Manager. The Project manager is responsible for ensuring that ongoing, clear and timely communication with the general community through identified communication strategies is performed. The Project Manager is also responsible to ensure that recipient relationships are in good standing, that proper documentation is executed and collected for record and that adequate support to the recipients is provided and solve problems as they arise.
  • Information Management – The Project Manager must develop a full understanding of the information management systems in order to track appropriately and in real-time the project progress as well as maintain quality control of project information and data. The information management team tracks technical data and will require supervision and support from the Project Manager.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in related field
  • Maters degree in a related field preferred. 
  • Fluent English is a requirement.  Excellent, professional communications skills in Bahasa Indonesia preferred. 
  • No ego, drama, or pessimism; the successful candidate will be flexible, humble, patient, and have a good sense of humor.
