Overview of Position:  As an award-winning social enterprise, Fair Trade USA takes pride in having developed a strong earned revenue stream that covers 80% of our annual budget. Philanthropic capital enables us to make strategic investments in farmer capacity-building, consumer education, new product development, innovation and growth initiatives. The Vice President of Resource Development is a key leadership position on our senior management team, charged with creating and overseeing the execution of all fundraising strategies and programs. This position requires a strategic thinker, capable manager and accomplished fundraiser.

The primary focus and responsibility of the VP of Resource Development is to achieve aggressive fundraising targets within the context of a $25 million capital campaign that we launched in 2014.  The VP will have the advantages of working with an experienced and commited Board of Directors, an energetic and visionary President & CEO, and one of the best-known brands in the non-profit and social entrepreneurship community.

Partnering with the President & CEO, the VP of Resource Development will work in close collaboration with our other business functions and categories to effectively engage financial supporters. The VP will lead a department that currently consists of four outstanding professionals.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in capital campaigns, major gifts, foundation fundraising and organizational leadership. We seek an entrepreneurial thinker with exceptional communications and interpersonal skills who is passionate about making a difference in the world.

Specific duties include:
  • Serve on the Senior Leadership Team, participate in Board meetings, and contribute to successful implementation of the strategic plan
  • Execute a $25 million growth capital campaign with the support of a nationally-recognized development firm (CCS)
  • Work closely with Fair Trade USA's President & CEO, Board of Directors and Advisory Council on donor acquisition, cultivation and stewardship
  • Personally cultivate and close major gifts for the campaign
  • Develop and implement an individual small gift program, including on-line and direct mail programs
  • Develop and meet departmental goals for fundraising, donor development, institutional outreach and partnerships
  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization and develop strong relationships with the philanthropic community including private and corporate foundations, individual donors and NGOs
  • Support the recruitment and development of new Board members and fundraising leadership volunteers
  • Manage departmental budgets, financial forecasts and success metrics
  • Lead and mentor the Resource Development staff
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Business Development and other departments to develop communication strategies that position us for philanthropic success
  • Occasional travel to domestic and international destinations, including site visits with major partners
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years of increasing responsibility in resource development, with success in generating and building long-term funding relationships
  • Successful experience managing a significant capital campaign
  • Experience in a broad array of fundraising domains, including online, direct mail, major gifts, corporate and private foundations
  • Demonstrated excellence in building relationships with board members, major donors, corporate giving managers and foundation staff
  • Track record of success with soliciting and closing major gifts
  • Excellent writing, verbal and presentation skills
  • Strong management and quantitative analysis skills
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and results
  • Ability to provide strategic leadership to the organization as a whole
  • Experience building, leading and mentoring a resource development team
  • International development experience preferred
  • Experience with social entrepreneurship and sustainability preferred
