office in Medan and Manokwari:
FIELD CONSERVATION AND GIS OFFICER
The Field Conservation and GIS Officer will support field based GIS and
forest conservation activities for the Sustainable Landscapes
Partnership (SLP) program in North Sumatra and West Papua. The Field
Conservation and GIS Officer will work closely with the Spatial Planning
and Environment Advisor, Conservation Specialist, the Spatial Planning
Coordinator and other technical managers to support SLP to achieve the
program objectives.
The duties of the Field Conservation and GIS Officer include GIS and
other technical support for work related to protected area management,
land use planning and program monitoring for the SLP landscapes. The
duty and day-to-day activities will be in varied locations in
challenging environmental and cultural conditions including remote
areas, in villages, at the district and province levels.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Use GPS, camera traps and other tools (Cybertracker, SMART, etc) to collect data from the field and assist field personnel in the capturing information spatially;
- Maintain associated metadata for all datasets and contact/procurement information for the relevant data providers including government agencies, civil society organizations, sub-contractors and grantees;
- Assess quality and check data collected or provided by sub-contractors and grantees; and
- Work with GIS coordinator to update and organize all GIS or Remote sensing data according to ISO standards.
Provide spatial analysis support to inform decision makers at various levels:
- Prepare and process base maps/information for analysis and spatial planning;
- Provide technical support in designing and ecological surveys using sampling protocols that meet national and international best practices including the Tropical Ecosystem Analysis and Monitoring (TEAM) network protocols;
- Conduct spatial analysis of geographic data needed for public consultations for spatial planning and participatory mapping as part of CCA;
- Presenting the analysis and mapping works that has been conducted to
related stakeholders (including NGO and other partners) in province,
district and community levels, as needed; and
Support training and capacity building as needed for local partners and government agencies.
- Provide on-the-job training related to GIS, remote sensing and mapping;
- Provide input in developing standard operation procedures (SOP) for data collection, analysis and spatial database maintenance;
- Help conduct training in the use of field equipment (Satellite phones, GPS units, Camera traps, etc) and entry-management-reporting of collected field data/information; and
- Help conduct training activities related to GIS, SMART and TEAM Network systems and sampling protocols (SMART, TEAM, etc).
Building relations and networks with local stakeholders needing spatial planning support
- Building and maintaining contacts and relationships with institutions/organizations and individuals;
- Help establish a spatial planning forum for the region (Province/District);
- Support on-the-job training for a number of stakeholders in government, NGOs and in the broader community; and
- Provide regular updates of issues and success stories from the field.
QUALIFICATION REQUIRED:
- Min 3 years’ working experience on conservation, spatial land use planning, natural resources management, or environmental planning in the use of GIS/RS.
- Has knowledge of geodesy and geographic information issues (e.g. projection, datum, data conversion etc.) and data management standards.
- Familiar use of GIS software (i.e. ArcGIS, QGIS, IDRISI, etc), including both vector and raster formats and spatial analysis methods. Experienced in cartography and map presentation design.
- Experience with MS-EXCEL, MS-ACCESS and graphic software would be an advantage.
- Good networking skills and knowledge on international and national NGOs in Indonesia.
- Good communication skills both in English and Bahasa Indonesia (reading, writing, oral and presentation).
- Experience with working in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, field surveys and ground checking for at least two years.
