Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) is one of Germany’s oldest and largest social welfare organisations with over 200 offices and a membership of 1.2 million.
ASB Indonesia and Philippines aims to build resilience through inclusive and risk aware development. ASB has been working in Indonesia, in partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Home Affairs, since 2006. In Indonesia ASB works directly with partners and communities, and in support of government, to empower and build resilience through an inclusive whole-of-community approach. The ASB Philippines Community Resilience Programme was established in 2015 and has the specific objective of strengthening the resilience of communities affected by Typhoon Haiyan via local partner led programming & increasing inclusive-DRR practice across different levels (local to regional). The Philippines programme is implemented through local partner led projects and is remotely managed from Indonesia by ASB. A key component of the work that ASB does across the region is implementing and promoting inclusive risk aware practice. ASB is also a founding member of the Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction Network (DIDRRN).

Duration of Work: The Occasional English proof-reader and translator will be hired on a occasional, as needed, basis based on ASB needs and in negotiation with the position holder. The services of the Occasional English proof reader and translator will be used on an occasional basis up until December 2016.
Reports to: ASB HR and Administrator Coordinator and is to coordinate closely with relevant staff member requesting the work.
Background: ASB Indonesia and the Philippines is seeking the services of a professional native English speaker English Proof Reader and Translator (Indonesia to English) with experience in proof reading English written by a non-native speaker, and translating from Indonesian to English. The English Proof Reader and Translator will assist ASB to ensure ASB produced documents meet a high quality of English. This will include ensuring that the English language in the document is easy to understand, clearly communicates the messages that ASB is trying to convey and uses language that is appropriate, and are suitable for an international English speaking audience.
Purpose: Provide services in producing high quality English language proof reading and Indonesian to English translation of ASB documents.
Key responsibilities & requirements:
- To proof read English documents written by ASB staff that are not native English speakers.
- To translate documents in Bahasa Indonesian to English.
- To deliver proof read and translated documents to ASB within 3 days of agreement of taking on work by the proof reader and translator, unless otherwise agreed between the service provider and ASB.
- Return all proof read or translated documents in word document files.
- To use track changes in word documents of proof read documents, so that ASB can clearly see the changes made.
- To follow ASB guidelines regarding appropriate language for translation of certain words or phrases.
- To use English language that is politically correct, inclusive and respectful in all submitted work.
- To discuss with ASB if there are any uncertainties regarding interpretation of language or meaning.
- To keep confidential any information that is sensitive or confidential regarding ASB and it's partner.
- Submitted deliverables as per proof reading or translating requests to a high standard.
- Native English speaker.
- Proven extensive professional experience working as an English proof-reader, editor and translator (Indonesian to English).
- Professional certification or degree related to translation and/or editing desired.
- Flexibility and availability to undertake work at short notice.
- Able to work to tight deadlines and submit work on time.
- Takes initiative.
- Aware of development and inclusive politically correct language.
- Experience in proof reading or translating international development work related documents linked to Indonesia.
- Submission of a cover letter outlining suitability for the position inline with the above criteria and availability for occasional work till the end of December 2016.
- Submission of a CV which outlines related experience meeting the above criteria that is no longer then two pages (CVs over two pages will not be considered).
- Short example of proof read work (using track changes or before and after versions) and translation Indonesian to English (Original Indonesian document and English translation).
- A professional quote in IDR for work broken down by proposed fee for proof reading and proposed fee for translation either per word or per page (including specifications of page layout and font). Proposed fees must be inclusive of any other related costs including tax (note ASB will deduct tax on the consultants behalf based on Indonesian tax laws).
- The name and contact details of three related references.
- Stated willingness to do a short proof reading and translation test over email at an agreed time.
