Micro
entrepreneurship Award
Program Summary:
In
partnership with a Commercial Bank Foundation, Mercy Corps Indonesia will
organize a Micro-entrepreneurship Award which will build micro enterprises
positive impact on Indonesia’s economy and work to drive further awareness and
recognition for the work of micro-entrepreneurs in order to promote and sustain
interest, support and investment in enterprise development and growth in
Indonesia. There are more than 60,000 micro finance institutions in Indonesia
(CGAP) reaching more than 50 million people in forms of Cooperatives, Rural
Bank, Credit Union, and BMT (Sharia based). Since the economic crisis of 1998,
the contribution of micro finance institutions to the Indonesian economy has had
a proven impact on the level of support for micro and small enterprise
development.
Micro finance
institutions have made strides in expanding access to savings and loan
products, but the micro and small enterprises have additional critical needs
including other financial services, business planning, financial management and
marketing support, to ensure their success and growth into the future. The
program will provide training to micro-entrepreneurs and will grant awards
through a competitive process to 20 micro-entrepreneurs who embody the concept
of “doing well by doing good,” and have shown demonstrable success both in
developing their businesses over a period longer than five years, while
simultaneously providing tangible social benefits to their surrounding
communities.
The
financial awards are aimed at both the development and capacity building of the
micro enterprise and their ability to have an impact on their local communities.
In addition to the awards, Mercy Corps Indonesia will provide training and
utilize an Android Platform, which has been developed with support from a
Commercial Bank Foundation, as a digital channel for micro-entrepreneurs to
provide wrap around services to meet business needs including: sharing
experiences and key learning in developing a successful business, problem
solving, facilitating greater access to new market opportunities, and to
provide financial and business education.
For
greater amplification of the program, Mercy Corps Indonesia will engage a media
company with established national network and distributions as its partner. It
is intended that the selected media partner will become part of the promotion
of the Micro-entrepreneurship Award from the beginning to the end of the
program. The media partner will continuously feature, distribute and expose the
Micro-entrepreneurship Award Program and Micro-entrepreneurs and Microfinance
Institutions selected as semi-finalists to the community across the country
from launching date to awarding night.
