Gender Equality Director
- Leadership opportunity to contribute to innovative Governance Program
- Based in Canberra, Australia (with regular travel to Papua New Guinea)
Program Overview
The
PNG Governance Facility (PGF) is an innovative governance initiative in
Papua New Guinea, aimed at contributing to security, stability, basic
service delivery and inclusive growth for all Papua New Guineans. The
PGF will be responsible for the design and implementation of most of
Australia’s future governance portfolio under the strategic direction
and oversight of the Australian and PNG Governments.
Role Summary
The
Gender Equality Director is responsible for leading the development and
implementation of the gender inclusiveness strategy within the
Governance Facility, with focus on three key aspects of women’s
empowerment:
- Strengthening women’s voice and agency – this includes focus on women as individual leaders in their family, their community, their church and social networks, their business, their government and in their political processes.
- Improving women’s economic empowerment – by supporting approaches that generate employment for women or enable them to be more productive in their businesses, whether they be in the cash economy or at the subsistence/informal level.
- Reducing violence against women –supporting programs that work to reduce violence and supporting women who are subjected to violence; to appropriately challenge cultural and social norms that enable violence to continue at such high levels in PNG.
The
Director will work closely with the PGF CEO and Program Directors to
ensure all aspects of the Gender strategy are developed and implemented
such that the rights of women are protected and barriers to women’s
empowerment are removed. The position will provide high level strategic
advice and technical guidance across all areas of PGF in relation to
Gender Equality to address program challenges and opportunities.
The successful candidate will bring:
- At least 10 years’ experience in gender and development (the work place, regulation, policy, economics, finance) or a related field, ideally in South East Asia
- Extensive knowledge and practical experience of how policy and regulation acts to constrain or promote women’s economic empowerment, strengthening women’s voice and agency and reducing violence against women
