The
ECPAT International network currently has more than 90 member
organisations in over 82 countries in Africa, Americas, Europe, Asia and
the Pacific. All of these members are independent organisations or
coalitions working against the commercial sexual exploitation of
children. The ECPAT Secretariat coordinates the global work of ECPAT
International and is based in Bangkok, Thailand. The Secretariat designs
programmes, advocacy and strategies to facilitate a range of network
initiatives to make the greatest impact on combating the Commercial
Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC).
Programme Description:
ECPAT’s
Programme to Combat Sexual Exploitation of Children Online (SECO)
promotes a multi-stakeholder approach through working closely with civil
society organisations, law enforcement, government and
inter-governmental entities as well as the private sector, in addressing
this issue at all levels. One area of the SECO Programme’s work is the
analysis of legal frameworks at national and regional levels and how
these are implemented and aligned with international norms such as the
Council of Europe Convention on Protection of Children against Sexual
Exploitation and Sexual Abuse and the Optional Protocol to the
Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child
prostitution and child pornography. The findings of this legal analysis
will be used to support advocacy strategies of our network members as
well as advocacy processes with policy and law makers globally.
Position Purpose:
Interns
have an opportunity to work with professional experts in the ECPAT
Secretariat, and depending on the specific assignment, with ECPAT
network members, partner organizations and external experts. The
internship programme aims at a learning-in-action or an experiential
learning approach which means that the orientation and learning of each
intern will take place largely through direct involvement in the work
agendas and activities of the ECPAT Secretariat.
Tasks and Responsibilities:The
intern will assist the Legal Officer of the SECO Programme in the
development of a Global Database on national legal frameworks against
sexual exploitation of children online in which domestic legislation in
92 countries are being assessed against the international and regional
conventions mentioned above. The content of the database will be used to
guide institutional advocacy and policy work and made public for any
interested party in the field.
Main tasks will include:
- Assist in the processes of research, collection and analysis of information on national laws and legal procedures related to sexual offences against children online in different countries/jurisdictions. This includes identifying amendments and changes, good practices, and researching case law;
- Assist with uploading country legal reports and their amendments into the online database;
- Ensure that information is up-to-date and displayed in a correct manner;
- Identify key topics for content development in the field of expertise aligned with the SECO Programme´s objectives and priority areas;
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Profile:
Qualifications:
Qualifications:
- Advanced university degree in law or commensurate work experience in the legal field;
- Demonstrated experience in carrying out legal analysis;
- Interest in knowledge of the child´s right to be protected from sexual exploitation in a digital environment and related-issues (substantive and procedural laws);
- Interest in the field of international development, human rights, and non-governmental organisations;
- Demonstrated experience with online platforms;
- Excellent English language skills; knowledge of French/ Spanish is a plus.

Internship Conditions:A
modest stipend of 10,000 Bath/month (around $280 USD) will be made
available to the intern who is not sponsored by other organisations or
institutions. All other costs related to the internship, i.e., travel,
passport, visa and living costs in Bangkok, are to be borne by the
intern.
