ZanaAfrica Group is building a powerful movement for girls and women by delivering awesome feminine hygiene products coupled with the information they need to make healthy and informed decisions. We’re looking for an energetic and dynamic Girl Content Specialist who will manage the content creation of a teen magazine in Kenya targeted at girls between the ages of 10-14. Nia Teen Magazine and corresponding SMS Platform, which includes health information that girls seek and need, an aspirational comic that models informed and healthy relationships, real life role models from across Kenya and celebrates real girls’ stories and highlights girl-created content. This content is designed for knowledge retention, behavior change and to encourage social capital for girls in our target audience. This magazine will be tested as part of a ground breaking randomized control trial starting in 2017 to elucidate the impact of delivering reproductive health education. S/he will establish content creation mechanisms and networks to ensure that all content is engaging, relevant, and grounded in girls’ needs, autonomy and power.

Responsibilities:
  • Establish and coordinate programs to gather content directly from girls to inform Nia Teen Magazine
  • Collaborate with Editor to develop, curate, and coordinate a network of content contributors who are able to provide girls’ stories for Nia Teen magazine.
  • Support editor in writing and communicating briefs for content creators as necessary.
  • Leverage analytical skill, internalization of target magazine outcomes and deep knowledge of girls’ lived experiences to review and potentially down-select content prior to presenting to editor for final decision-making.
  • Collaborate with Editor to establish and implement programs and activities with girls directly in order to generate content (e.g., writing contests, events, focus group discussions, interviews etc.)
  • Conduct interviews and discussions with girls directly to generate stories
  • Develop magazine features in collaboration with Editor
  • In collaboration with Editor, build out Nia Teen Magazine content plan and angles; recommend and source storylines for features
  • Collaborate with Editor and other team members to develop and build interactive activities to engage girls in learning about health and lifestyle topics through Nia Teen Magazine
  • Engage regularly with girls to get feedback on magazine stories and features
Qualifications + Requirements:
  • BA in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Writing, Education, Gender Studies, Public Health/Social Sciences or related field, or related experience
  • 2-5 years of experience in creative industry, education, and/or social science
Research:
  • Previous experience interacting with young adolescent and adolescent girls in Kenya, ideally in both a programmatic and research setting
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in both Kiswahili and English
  • Strong planning and organizational skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Well-versed in women and girls’ issues, reproductive health and human rights
  • Unapologetic belief and passion for girls and women’s rights and potential
  • Fluent Kiswahili speaker with an in-depth understanding of Sheng is required
