ZSL Indonesia Job Vacancy: Communication Assistant - Palembang, South Sumatera

The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL’s Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera.We are now looking for:

COMMUNICATION ASSISTANT

Duration of Contract : One year fix- term Contract, with potential to extend
Work Area : The Communication Assistant will be based in Palembang, South Sumatera
Hours of Work : Monday to Friday from 09.00 am up to 05.00 pm
Reporting to : Communication & Outreach Manager
 

Key Purpose of the Job
The Communication Assistant will be responsible for developing and implementing the ZSL’s communication strategy, which includes preparing a wide range of written materials, web-based communications, presentations, and possibly videos for local and international audiences. He/she will also be in charge of maintaining ZSL’s system of identifying, tracking, and recording the program, including develop a strategy to meet the program’s fundraising targets. 

This position is part of the UKCCU/NICFI Project staffing in South Sumatra. 

The UKCCU/NICFI Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that reduces land-based GHG emissions”. 

Main Responsibilities
  • Responsible to provide outreach and communications support for major stakeholders events
  • Responsible to prepare the invitations, the list of invitees, the venue, engage with key partners including media to ensure their participation.
  • Coordinate communications materials and the program for the event with Communication and Outreach Advisor.
  • Assist the Communication and Outreach Advisor to prepare an outreach plan, communications materials for major events and provide documentation of events, including preparing  press releases, online newsfeeds and other media engagement
  • Involve in writing/editing, documenting case studies and lessons learned, and supervising the production of finished communication tools and products including web-based applications.
  • Visit field projects and take photos to support ZSL’s program evaluation, share lessons learned with partners, and support reporting to the donors.
  • Develop content for ZSL website, contact partners and stakeholders to provide blogs or stories about the program
  • Support online social media and outreach initiatives to promote ZSL program and other activities.
  • Produce and manage communications materials for conferences and meetings.
  • Perform other communications related  duties, as required

The job requires continued professional internal and external interaction/ communications, both in person and via phone and email

Mental Demands
The position will require close attention to detail in all aspect of the project and therefore concentration on the work in hand – precision and accuracy being vital attributes.

Flexibility
The position will be relatively routine in terms of day-to-day tasks during office hours – however sometimes e.g. during field trips or when a workshop is being organized the next day, some flexibility in working hours may be required.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism or an equivalent degree
  • Minimum 5 years working experiences in communication and outreach
  • Working experience for an international NGO is desirable
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with the proven ability to multi-task and operate successfully under tight deadlines and time pressures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong working relationship with stakeholders and the government Institutions
Knowledge
  • Knowledge and experience in production of public outreach materials and communications strategy
  • Some knowledge of conservation issues, peatlands, community or industry land use in Indonesia would be desirable  
Skills & Abilities
  • Computer literacy (excellent IT skills); competent in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and other MS tools;
  • Adept at using various applications including database, spreadsheet, graphics, word processing, presentation creation/editing, online social media, communicate by e-mail and use scheduling software.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite in a cross-platform environment; experience with desktop publishing/page layout/photo editing software highly desirable.
  • Good communication skills and diplomacy around sensitive issues;
  • Willing to work at any circumstances both independently or in a group, such as in remote areas with very limited facilities.
  • Excellent in writing skills and oral communication both in Indonesian and English.
  • Able to deal with tight  schedule and unscheduled tasks, and target oriented
  • Willing to travel extensively across the project sites in Indonesia
