Climate Policy Initiative Job Vacancy: Program Assistant - Berau, East Kalimantan

CPI works to improve the most important energy and land use practices around the world. With deep expertise in policy and finance, our mission is to help governments, businesses, and financial institutions drive growth while addressing climate risk. We work in places that provide the most potential for impact, including Africa, Brazil, China, Europe, India, Indonesia, and the U.S.
In Indonesia, CPI supports the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and sub-national governments in Central and East Kalimantan. CPI's analysis covers topics such as climate finance – both private and public, fiscal policy, and sustainable natural resource management.  At sub-national level, CPI is partnering with local university and NGOs to support government's work in promoting sustainable land use and transition to green economy.
Background
Climate Policy Initiative (CPI), in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), is developing a program focusing on sustainable oil palm in East Kalimantan with a district-level focus on Berau. The program is funded by the German Ministry of Environment (BMUB), and focuses on designing a jurisdictional-approach pilot program to shift the region towards more environmentally sustainable standards of agricultural practice.
The program seeks to address economic incentives/disincentives to reduce pressure to convert or degrade tropical forests, while meeting regional economic development goals by developing key local commodities such as palm oil.
CPI’s approach to meeting the program objectives revolves around three strategies:
  • Strengthening fiscal capacity to support the region’s green growth and sustainability goals.
  • Increasing the productivity and efficiency of the palm oil value chain, from upstream to downstream, where opportunities for significant improvement exists.
  • Extracting the maximum economic values of oil palm-based products along and beyond the palm oil value chain (i.e. developing the downstream sector, utilizing oil palm and oil palm by-products into new and innovative products, etc.).
Our approach requires intensive engagement with partners and stakeholders in East Kalimantan on a regular basis.  CPI is seeking a Program Assistant to be based in East Kalimantan and help manage the project on the ground.
