Landesa is seeking a knowledgeable and conscientious Director of Compliance responsible for the strategic direction, management, and implementation of Landesa’s compliance program; ensuring business is carried out ethically and in compliance with national and international laws and regulations, professional standards, accepted business practices, and internal policies and procedures. The Director will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will assess, mitigate, monitor, and report risks to the Board and Executive Leadership Team. Landesa is an international nonprofit, founded in 1981, and dedicated to ending global poverty by securing land rights for the world’s poorest. Landesa has worked in 50 countries throughout the world, with a home office in Seattle, WA and field offices in China and India. The organization is widely supported by partners, including NGOs, foundations, donor agencies (USAID, World Bank, etc.), world leaders, educational institutions and individual supporters throughout the world. Landesa is known for its advancement of pro-poor, gender-sensitive land rights reforms that have helped alleviate poverty, reduce hunger, and ease conflict over land for more than 120 million women and men. The Director of Compliance must share Landesa’s values, demonstrate commitment to its mission, and be passionate about those in poverty by promoting land reform to assist them to better their lives.
Here’s what you’ll be leading, supported by the Landesa team:
- Develop the strategy and implementation of compliance programs at Landesa
- Establish strategy, standards, and procedures to ensure compliance programs are effective and efficient. Ensure compliance programs are successfully implemented.
- Assess compliance or operational risks and develop risk management strategies.
- Assist the Chief Operating Officer to develop strategies for operational development and implement operational plans, where required, to support and facilitate efficiency and productivity.
- Report to the Audit Committee and Executive Leadership Team, as required, to highlight any issues or trends that pose a greater risk to the organization.
Internal compliance investigations
- Coordinate and conduct periodic internal audit and compliance reviews of Landesa field offices and headquarters’ financial transactions, procedures, and policies to ensure compliance and reduce the risk of fraud, abuse, and waste.
- Assist COO with internal investigations and manage resulting corrective actions.
- In coordination with department heads, as necessary, draft, disseminate, and implement policies, systems, and procedures related to compliant operations.
Implementation management
- Develop and present trainings to ensure that all employees and management are knowledgeable of, and comply with, pertinent policies and regulations.
- Review cost principles, permissibility of costs charged to projects, and develop appropriate policies and procedures in accordance with donor/ client rules and regulations. Implement improved accounting controls, efficiency, and safeguarding of organizational assets.
- Assist the COO with the development of systems related to grant compliance, human resources, duty of care, and operations.
Coordinate and manage external audits:
- Respond to queries and requests as a principal point of contact, and collaborate with accounting and programs teams to prepare and provide all required documentation/ information required.
Here’s what will support your success:
- An advanced degree in law, social sciences, international development, economics, finance, accounting, or related.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of administering grants, contracts or cooperative agreements, or other funding arrangements in an organization with remote international offices, including 5+ years of progressive experience in compliance reviews/ audits.
- An understanding of US Government regulations including A133 audits, FAR, and OMB’s Super Circular.
- Some familiarity with Indian financial regulations governing trusts including FCRA and FEMA.
- An understanding of bilateral and multi-lateral grant and contract compliance requirements.
- Basic understanding of accounting principles.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively represent the organization to internal and external audiences. Ability to create and present presentations to multiple groups including the ELT and the Board.

- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels.
- Proven ability to lead by example, whereby one is receptive to input from others and will respect, empower, and energize the entire organization.
- Strong organization, attention to detail, and writing abilities with proven skills in quantitative analysis are highly beneficial.
This position is located in our downtown Seattle, WA headquarters. Your Landesa career will include significant domestic and international travel (up to 70 - 80 days per year) to the countries where Landesa works.
