Solidaridad regional expertise centre in South and South-East Asia is headquartered in New Delhi, India and manages programmes through it 16 offices across 8 countries in Asia. Solidaridad South and South-East Asia provides scalable and economically effective sustainability solutions in agriculture and mining sectors in collaboration with governments, businesses and the community. Solidaridad aims to drive sustainability from niche to norm in Asian markets and among Asian producers in a way that can sustain people, planet and profits. Our activities are currently focused on cotton, textiles, soy, sugarcane, castor, fruits and vegetables, dairy, aquaculture, leather, industrial minerals, tea and palm oil.
About the Position:
Solidaridad South and South-East Asia is seeking an experienced, senior development professional who will be responsible for leading the implementation of Solidaridad’s strategy, growing the country programmes and operations, and expanding the reach of the organization in Sri Lanka. This position will involve representing Solidaridad at country specific forums and promoting the Solidaridad vision and mission within the country. The Country Manager reports to the Managing Director of South and South-East Asia and is part of the senior management team of the regional office.
Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka
Reporting to: Managing Director, Solidaridad South and South East Asia.
Position: Regular (40 hours a week)
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Lead and provide overall management support to Solidaridad led and EU funded WASH programme in 4 districts of Sri Lanka in close coordination with the programme coordinator leading the project and Local Partners in Sri Lanka.
- To set up the country office of Sri Lanka in Colombo and Field Office/s based on requirements and establish Solidaridad as a leading sustainability organisation in the country.
- Support development of field programmes Solidaridad commodities in Sri Lanka. It would include supporting farmers to produce more with less negative social consequences and damage to the ecosystem.
- Facilitate programmes that supports producers in developing clear business cases and investable propositions to mobilize financial resources like equity, credits and impacts investment necessary to bring farming business to the next level.
- Assist Sri Lankan companies to address climate change related challenges like watershed management, land use planning, deforestation, biodiversity and degraded land management through multi-stakeholder collaborations and setting up national platforms.
- To support businesses operating in Sri Lanka to implement its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies in line with Solidaridad Mission and Vision.
- To develop a strong team of field implementers as well as strategic advisors for implementing complex sustainability programmes in Sri Lanka.
- Managing and develops projects, programmes and identifying potential funding opportunities from Social Sector Funders and private sector.
- Developing Concept/Proposal in close coordination with Managing Director of Solidaridad South and South East Asia.
- As the first point of contact maintains regular liaison with relevant Sri Lankan Government, Provincial principal Authority, Chambers of Commerce, businesses, Embassies and other stakeholders.
- Financial governance and financial reporting to the Solidaridad Network, Funders and private sector partners in close coordination of Solidaridad South and South East Asia.
- Day-to-day management of the Country Office in close coordination with the Managing Director.
- Developing Organogram for the Country office of Sri Lanka and updating it from time to time to ensure adequate positions are filled up as per requirements of the Projects/Programmes.
The Country Manager must meet the following criteria:
- Relevant master’s degree (e.g. in economics, MBA, development studies, or agriculture)
- Citizen or residents of Sri Lanka with permit to work across Sri Lanka
- At least 10 years working experience in the field of sustainability. Should have experience of managing sustainability projects at senior level in Sri Lanka.
- An excellent understanding of the policy environment, issues and stakeholders in the agri-business sector in Sri Lanka.
- A broad network with NGO’s, farmer organisations and government authorities in Sri Lanka;
- At least 5 years’ experience with sustainability standards and/or certification schemes in Sri Lanka
- Proven ability to obtain financing from public and private donors
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively and lead strategic processes in Sri Lanka
- Excellent leadership skills and demonstrable management experience including supervising a team of talented professionals in Sri Lanka
- Strong commitment to teamwork
- Ability to work well under pressure and ensure high quality outputs for the region
- Excellent oral and writing skills in English and Sinhalese.
- Sound judgement and ability to plan, prioritise, organise and manage multiple priorities in a complex and changing operating environment
