Title of the position: Global Policy Officer

Remuneration: From USD 4,500.00/month (tax exempt for those who are not Chinese citizen)
Duration: Fixed Term – 2 years, with 6-month probation period
The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) is the only global inter-governmental development organization committed to reducing poverty and protecting the environment through the use of bamboo and rattan. With headquarters in Beijing, China and offices in India, Ethiopia, Ghana and Ecuador, the INBAR Secretariat supports its 43 Member States worldwide and has links with a large number of international, regional, and national organizations.
INBAR is currently seeking a highly capable Global Policy Officer to support Director General from policy perspective. Please find the main responsibilities for this role:
Responsibilities
- Be responsible for engagement and partnerships with international policy-focused agencies, including UN agencies and environment-focused multilateral organizations;
- Manage INBAR’s South-South Cooperation and One Belt One Road strategy in collaboration with Global Programme;
- Provide strategic policy advice to the Director General and the INBAR Executive Management Team;
- Strategize for INBAR to best take advantage of its status as an observer to the UN General Assembly; manage INBAR’s observer status with other Rio Conventions;
- Draft or update key policy-relevant products (memos, speeches, resolutions, briefing notes, etc.) in furtherance of bamboo and rattan’s contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals in collaboration with the Communications team;
- Lead efforts to lobby for the inclusion of bamboo and rattan in countries’ national strategies together with Global Programme and INBAR’s four regional offices;
- Spearhead INBAR’s engagement with existing member Canada as well as countries throughout the Global North both in Beijing and internationally;
- Represent INBAR or manage INBAR’s presence at global environment and international development meetings to increase the profile of bamboo and rattan, including through the organization of relevant side events, in collaboration with Membership Affairs;
- Fluency in spoken and written English is required; knowledge of other languages, especially Chinese, Spanish, and French, will be advantageous.
Requirements
- Minimum 5-7 years hands-on international work experience and a proven track record of influencing policy formulation around the world;
- Higher degree in political science or international relations or related topic. Understanding and knowledge about sustainable development and environmental policies;
- Excellent writing skills and proven expertise in producing memos, speeches, resolutions and briefing notes, etc.;
- Excellent presentation skills with senior officials;
- Strategic advisory experience;
- Solid experience in policy discussion with strong strategic thinking;
- Experience with an international organization or with a foreign diplomatic service will be an advantage;
- A self-starter with strong willingness in taking initiatives in work, innovative, attention to detail, well-organized, hardworking;
- Comfortable in an office with cross-cultural international staff, and therefore flexible in work planning and execution;
- Excellent English spoken and written communication skills. Proficiency in French, Spanish or Chinese language will be an advantage.
