United Nations Program Coordinator
Founded in 1990 and guided by the values of collaboration, depth and
feminism, OutRight Action International (OutRight) strives to support
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people
to live safer, healthier, and more empowered lives worldwide. OutRight’s
vision of change includes policy reform, legal challenges, coalition
initiatives, and stronger LGBTIQ communities worldwide. OutRight
currently seeks a United Nations Program Coordinator based in New York
City.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The UN Program Coordinator leads the work of the OutRight UN Program
Team. The UN Program Coordinator contributes to the vision and direction
of the OutRight UN Program and reports to the OutRight Senior Advisor
for Global Advocacy.
- Direct the advocacy work for OutRight across the United Nations with a focus on the General Assembly, Commission on the Status of Women, and High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
- Manage and support the staff in the UN Program Team.
- Support and build substantive engagement of LGBTIQ international civil society with the UN headquarters mechanisms including leading the UN Religion Fellows Program, the Annual Advocacy Week Program, and at major UN headquarters conferences.
- Support OutRight Regional Program Coordinators in developing advocacy strategies focused on engaging the UN in collaboration with the Senior Advisor for Global Advocacy.
- Collaborate with like-minded NGOs, including by identifying, joining and leading relevant coalition efforts; defining joint advocacy objectives; and organizing meetings and trainings.
- Engage relevant national, regional and international stakeholders, including UN member State missions, UN special mechanisms, UN agencies and the UN Secretariat to support LGBTIQ rights at UN headquarters, including the UN LGBTIQ Core Group.
- Draft material, including in particular: resolution language proposal for UN negotiations, advocacy materials, OutRight’s quarterly UN New Yorker Newsletter, curricula for training programs, press releases, and advocacy letters.
- Serve as an organizational spokesperson, including but not limited to government officials, UN agencies, media and the public.
- Knowledge of and experience working in the United Nations and/or relevant political contexts.
- Knowledge of and experience working on international LGBTIQ rights.
- Knowledge of and experience with high-level advocacy or lobbying.
- Experienced writer and editor.
- Experience managing staff and organizational processes.
- Willingness and ability to travel.
- Ability to communicate fluently in written and oral English
- Ability to communicate fluently in a written and oral language a UN language other than English is strongly desired.
- Advanced degree or 15 years minimum experience in a related field.
- Willingness to work in New York City and, if necessary, to apply and qualify for a US working visa. (Note: OutRight is willing to work with a preferred candidate on a US visa application, however employment can only be given to someone who can secure and maintain the visa.)
- Commitment to the on-going study of political change, cultural norms and movement building.
